Incorporated in 2009, Uquutaq Society took over operation of Iqaluit’s homeless men’s shelter as the Salvation Army exited the territory. Guided by the vision “Together, we will end homelessness,” Uquutaq provides healthy, safe, and dignified housing solutions for the people of Iqaluit. Since its inception, the Society has expanded to operate a homeless men’s shelter, transitional housing for men, affordable housing, and an overnight low-barrier emergency shelter. In 2026, Uquutaq will complete an expanded three-storey building with a year-round warming and drop-in centre, a 44-bed shelter for men and women, and 13 transitional rooms. By 2028, the Butler Single Room Occupancy Supportive Housing project will add 32 rooms for elders and young adults. Additionally, plans are underway for a third project offering 40+ units of affordable housing, strengthening Uquutaq’s commitment to closing housing gaps in Iqaluit.
