DESCRIPTION
Peer Support Worker is a common position in southern shelters. This is a new concept in Nunavut. In Iqaluit, at least half the population is non-Inuit and the majority of shelter and transitional housing users are Inuit. Most of the frontline workers are non-Inuit and many are recent immigrants to Canada. This is due to the competition for workers with the City of Iqaluit, territorial and federal government for skilled Inuit workers. A Peer Support Worker in our context is Inuk and has successfully transitioned out of homelessness. This position is crucial for our work, providing our shelter guests with a role model who can support in their own language and cultural framework, understanding Inuit traditions, history and the Canadian northern history of colonization.
