DESCRIPTION

HOTT’s Tenant Stability Fund will meet the diverse needs of our residents through rental and arrears assistance, emergency crisis relief, and support for staff-client ratios. Currently, HOTT does not have sufficient funding to provide rent assistance. This fund would help cover rent top-ups, arrears, deposits, insurance, and utilities—essential for residents facing sudden challenges like job loss, illness, or unexpected expenses. Emergency situations, such as deep cleans, hoarding interventions, or replacing mobility devices, place financial strain on HOTT’s limited charitable funding. Ensuring adequate staffing ratios is equally critical, as our staff work closely with tenants to stabilize housing, reduce eviction risk, and build self-sufficiency through move-in support, budgeting and payment plans, income and counselling access, skill-building, and community connection. These services promote stability, health, and resilience.

Use of funds

Funds will be used to meet the varied needs of our residents. As our residents community is diverse, their needs vary greatly. This fund will support our residents in the form of rental & arrears assistance, emergency crisis relief, & supporting staff-client ratios to work directly with households. These elements will ensure housing stability, prevent eviction, and maintain tenant wellbeing.

Human Impact Story

We supported an elderly tenant with serious health challenges whose unit fell into disrepair, creating pest issues that threatened housing stability. By coordinating deep cleaning, storage solutions, Toronto Public Health support, and tenancy compliance, the tenant was stabilized and has remained safe for over a year.

We supported a mother of four, fleeing abuse, who had found herself struggling to maintain her home in the aftermath of trauma. When HOTT discovered the family’s difficult living conditions, we responded with compassion, connecting her to mental health supports, helping her relocate to another HOTT unit, and waiving all repair costs so she could start fresh. Today, her children are living in a clean, stable home, and she continues to rebuild her confidence and independence with HOTT’s ongoing support services.
