OMRA Shelter Corporation provides portable rent subsidies to refugee families for 1-4 years, allowing them to adapt to Canadian life and become independent. Activities include assessing newcomer families, fundraising through grocery card sales and donations, communicating success stories, providing tutoring and kitchen goods, and facilitating access to health and employment services. OMRA has improved affordable housing access for refugees since 2001. A 2024 University of Ottawa evaluation identified OMRA's success addressing the gap between shelter allowances and rent. OMRA provides short-term, focused supports including housing guidance, English tutoring with orientation to Canada, and furniture and apartment essentials through a local partnership".
