DESCRIPTION

In 2024, HomeSpace broke ground on a 52-unit townhome development in the community of Whitehorn/Horizon, set to be completed in the Spring of 2026. These homes will be 2 and 3-bedroom transitional units designed to bridge the critical gap between homelessness and more permanent housing. This project will create a vibrant, family-friendly environment, with active spaces and thoughtfully designed amenities, including an 8,500 square foot Resident Amenity Building with offices, programming, and communal spaces for families and service agencies. Outdoor amenities include a playground, a multi-use patio, a community garden and a basketball court for resident use. This is a transit-oriented development with homes conveniently next to the Whitehorn C-Train station – connecting families to schools, recreation, and essential services throughout the city. HomeSpace guarantees affordability for a minimum of 40 years and all aspects of the project are in alignment with Home is Here, the City of Calgary's Housing Strategy.

Project Funding

Funding Required

To complete this project debt free, HomeSpace requires 8.5 million in additional funding.

Funds Raised

To date, we have raised 17 million, with 7.3 million coming from the City of Calgary's Housing Capital Initiative. We are not able to publically share the sources of the remaining funding.

Use of funds

In the past few years, the number of families seeking affordable housing has grown at an alarming rate and the urgency to create more could not be clearer. This project is intended to help ease this strain on our housing system by supporting 52 families at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness. A social serving agency partner, who will be selected in the coming months, will help families stabilize from homelessness and learn the housing skills needed to succeed in long-term affordable housing programs or market housing. The goal is to alleviate housing pressure and offer families a stable foundation from which to build their future.

The requested funds will go directly towards the remaining contruction costs for the development.
