DESCRIPTION
Our goal is to establish a dedicated housing site offering up to six respite housing spaces for adults with developmental disabilities, located within or near the Halton Region in Ontario. We are seeking to acquire a property for development or renovation; however, we are open to alternative approaches that could accelerate the start of operations. For example, we would consider renting a suitable property initially to begin program delivery while pursuing the acquisition of a permanent site. Following the successful launch of the respite housing site, we plan to expand our services to include long-term housing options—either by converting a portion of the initial site or by developing a second property dedicated to permanent housing.

Project Funding
Funding Required
We are seeking $100,000 to provide initial funding for our early stage project efforts. Alternatively donation of land or an existing home which could be made suitable to our needs would greatly accelerate our efforts.
Funds Raised
Approximately $3,500 in donations from interested supporters and corporate matching programs.
Use of funds
Funds would be used to advance community awareness and fundraising efforts as well to engage community resources to provide legal, real estate, planning and contracting expertise related to acquiring and building and/or renovating an appropriate site. Depending on the amount of funds available and interests of the donors alternative approaches could be considered such as rental of an initial site to expedite provision of service while a permanent site is developed.
Human Impact Story
This story is from parents in our area describing the positive impact of respite, which was provided by one of the very few existing local respite providers. Our Own Home seeks to establish a site to help expand the availability of such opportunities in our community.
"We were feeling overwhelmed with the demands of constant care of our son which was 24/7 since his birth. One of us always has to be with him we can't leave him alone. We came across an organization which offered respite for a week and we decided to take the plunge. Our son had never even spent a night away from us let alone a whole week. The facility had trained staff 24/7 in 8 hour shifts. This respite opportunity was the best thing that could ever happen to us and our son. As parents, we finally got the chance to spend time with each other, to breathe, to recuperate and recharge or batteries. Our son also had a wonderful time. Much as we needed a break, he also seemed to enjoy time away from his parents. When we picked him up after the week was over he was all smiles and even his behaviour had improved for many subsequent days. What a difference a week makes!"
