DESCRIPTION

Edmonton Women’s Shelter Ltd. (WIN House) is launching a transformative housing initiative for women, children, and non-binary individuals fleeing violence. The project will create a five-storey, 64-unit affordable housing complex offering second- and third-stage transitional housing — vital bridges between emergency shelter and permanent homes — in a safe, supportive environment. This addresses Edmonton’s severe survivor housing shortage: as of April 2024, 1,519 women were homeless (69% Indigenous). From 2022–23, only 32% of emergency and 4% of second-stage requests were met, leaving many in unsafe or hidden homelessness. The building includes 8 one-bedroom, 40 two-bedroom, and 16 three-bedroom units, with 8 fully accessible. Units can combine for flexibility (e.g., four-bedroom). Upper floors ensure safety and privacy; the ground floor offers WIN House offices, community and play spaces, Indigenous and Elder rooms, prayer space, and secure entry. This project fills a critical gap, helping survivors recover, rebuild, and achieve lasting stability.

Use of funds

Upon successful completion of this project, the positive impacts on women and children in Edmonton will be significant and lifelong. The project will increase the continuum of supports for survivors of violence and their children, offering second and third stage apartment units for families. They will have a safe and secure home to live in while accessing the support services they need for success. The project will affordably house 64 more families in Edmonton that were not receiving support previously. This will alleviate some of the pressure of the housing crisis. The project will save women’s and children’s lives
